How do 4x4s contribute to climate change? When fossil fuels like petrol or diesel are burned they give off carbon dioxide - the main climate change gas. The amount of carbon dioxide given off is directly related to the amount of fuel burnt. Big vehicles with big engines like Land Rovers use alot of fuel per mile, so they give off more carbon dioxide making the problem of climate change much worse

Why are manufacturers like Land Rover being irresponsible? Land Rover makes gas-guzzing cars which are having a significant negative impact on the environment. The Land Rover Discovery only does 12 miles per gallon in the city. Worse, their parent company Ford uses its money and power to block attempts by governments to introduce measures which would help combat climate change. At 12-13 mpg the Range Rover and Land Rover Discovery are some of the most polluting cars that are possible to buy and Land Rover are investing millions promoting them as lifestyle icons. Range Rovers are marketed primarily for use on tarmac where their size, weight and design are totally uneccessary and their excessive fuel consumption causes 3 times more climate change pollution than an average family car.
What can be done to eliminate or decrease 4x4s' impact on the climate? Firstly, 4x4s should only be used where necessary - on farms, or when towing or carrying heavy equipment. They are too damaging for the climate to be for everyday use in the city. It is possible to make 4x4s a little more fuel-efficient. Hybrid 4x4s will soon be on the market and fuel consumption will be significantly improved. However fuel efficiency will still only be a fraction of what it could be if the same technology was used on an average family car. Vehicles that are designed for off road use are never going to be climate friendly in the city
