PLASTIC RECYCLING

Through the year 2006 Coventry Friend's of the Earth collected signatures through its street stalls and Online Petition in an effort to persuade Coventry City Council to initiate a plastic recycling scheme.  After collecting over 700 signatures it seemed obvious that the public wanted something to happen.  Following radio interviews, articles in the local press and a mass cycle ride to Kenilworth Recycle Centre with a cargo of plastic bottles, the petition was presented to the council in 2007 by Councillor Dave Nellist.  As a consequence a report was produced by the Council, and Coventry FoE was invited to present the plastic recycling case at a public meeting.  This resulted in the Council agreeing to trial a doorstep collection of cans, glass bottles and plastic bottles to 16,000 homes in Coventry commencing in April/May 2007. The trial has subsequently been successful enough to roll the collections out to at total of 30,000 homes

CLIMATE CHANGE
A big campaign of Coventry FoE over the last 12 months has been "Climate Change". With the use of stalls and our energy garden we have been to most of the local festivals, handing out information on how every one can make a difference. This included informing people how they could sign up to green energy and what differences they could make around the home. One of our current campaigns is to highlight the increasing trend for 4X4s or SUVs (Sports Utility Vehicles) in an urban environment. In the city the Land Rover Discovery only does 12 miles per gallon. The amount of carbon dioxide given off is dirctly related to the amount of fuel burnt. We believe that due to the general scientific consensus that climate change is occurring, the government should be discouraging the use of SUVs where they are not necessary and do more to promote the use of fuel efficient cars. GENETICALY MODIFIED FOOD
Coventry Friends of the Earth are actively campaigning against the commercial growing of Genetically Modified crops as well as highlighting to the public the dangers posed by allowing GM crops to enter the food chain. Two of the ways we campaigned on this issue was to organise a public meeting in Coventry City Centre and to create a Carnival Type float for the GM march in London.
